The Rector is the University's legal representative (Art. 10 of the University Statute) and plays an active role in guaranteeing and defining the University's policies. He chairs the Academic Senate and the Board of Directors. It supervises the functioning and efficiency of the University's structures and services, guarantees the teaching and research autonomy of the teaching staff, exercises disciplinary authority over all staff and students, proposes both the three-year planning document and the annual and three-year budget and final accounts.
